Understanding Mount Si Wrestling

Practice Scheduling

  • Please navigate to Daily Calendar page on this site to view practice start and release times for the week and month.  Practice times are subject to change.  Coaching staff will make their best effort to release wrestlers on time, allowing them to shower and clean up before leaving the building for the day.  The coaching staff realizes that wrestling comes during a time-crunched season, and that we all have families and other commitments to manage.  There will be times, however, when practice times will need to be adjusted.  Thank you for your understanding!
  • Intense Practices - Wrestlers are required to bring clean workout clothing, running and wrestling shoes to each practice.  Wrestlers new to high school wrestling will learn quicky the high demand of the sport.  Soreness, and fatigue are to be expected, even for well-conditioned athletes.  Wrestlers need to manage time well, finishing homework early, and getting plenty of sleep in the off-hours.

What to Expect at Tournaments

  • Time
    • Tournaments land on Saturdays throughout the season.  Most of our tournaments will have JV, Varsity, and Girls options.  It is expected that wrestlers attend all tournaments that pertain to their particular level (JV, Varsity, Girls).
    • Tournaments typically start at 9:00 and in most cases end between 5:00pm and 9:00pm.  Wrestlers and families attending and watching need to plan accordingly.  It is a full day of hanging out watching wrestling.  Team parents tend to sit in one general section of particular gymnasium and support each others' wrestlers.  This year we have also added a banner to show our Wildcat Pride to help identify our parent section.
  • Transportation
    •  Coaching staff will provide transport to tournaments via car, and one district small bus.  Additional help from parents may be requested on certain events ahead of time.  Having the small bus will allow coaches to return at least 14 wrestlers.  Usually parents work together to carpool wrestlers home for tournaments.

      • Varsity @ 7:00 or when JV finishes

Determining Varsity and JV positions

  • Varsity positions are determined through wrestle offs in practices.  We will run wrestle offs through December.  Once a wrestler has defended his varsity spot 3 times, he/she will be awarded the spot for the remainder of the season.  The coach has the right to pull a wrestler from a varsity position for violating athletic code, missing practice, and other behavioral issues that hamper a positive team environment.

Understanding the Bodyfat/Hydration Analyses/Test

  • The body-fat/hydration test is a test performed at the beginning of the season.  The wrestler must enter the test in a hydrated state.  He/she is then weighed and body-fat percentage is assessed.  From that evaluation, a lowest weight class is established, keeping the male wrestler at 7% body-fat or above, and the female 12% or above.  Each wrestler attempting to descent to his/her lowest permitted weight class, must follow a decent plan.  This decent plan regulates the amount of weight they can lose each week.  The idea is that the wrestler stays hydrated as he/she safely loses weight over the course of the season.
  • The coaching staff discusses the weight loss possibilities with each wrestler and advises them according to their year end goals.  Wrestlers aspiring to place high at the state level tend to plan on entering the post-season at the lowest permitted weight class.  Wrestlers trying out wrestling for the first time are usually advised not to worry about losing weight.  Coaches are more concerned that they have a positive experience, and succeed at learning technique and value the conditioning that wrestling provides.
